Mapping One

The first mapping at Detroit's Build Institute with the Global Shaper's group. The group was excited to map their ideal Detroit, without having to think about all of the things that would get in their way. Meeting with this group really helped cement our idea.

The Global Shapers on the mapping:

"What makes this [exercise] great is that without all of the predefined information of Detroit we can just make what we really want."

Mapping Two

The second mapping done with the students at College for Creative Studies.

The map was very neat, and well organized - like you'd expect from design students - and used a lot of stickers. Similar to the 4th graders map, it included an area for cats.

Mapping Three

The third mapping done with 4th grade students at Wines Elementary. The class had over 30 students, so we split into two groups of roughly 15 students. Since the students were excited to draw what they wanted without any guidance, some of the things added were more fantastical that in previous mappings. However, they added a lot of important things that the other mappings hadn't, such as multiple schools, stores, and green areas.

Students explaining their map:

"There is a jail right next to the military base, so we can fire at [the prisoners] if they escape."

A pair of the students on
how they'd make their own city:

"We'd make a normal city... with nice neighborhoods and schools."

One of the "cat world" creators:

"We have a money department somewhere, even though everything in cat world is free."

Ms. Hendrick, the teacher:

"Are landmines good for a city?"
